Message from the Director of School

Shelby County Schools (SCS), Tennessee’s largest school public school district, is committed to preparing all students for success in learning, leadership, and life. Through our strategic plan, Destination 2025, we are working toward three goals: 80 percent of students are college or career ready, 90 percent of seniors graduate on time and 100 percent of graduates will enroll in a post-secondary opportunity. To reach these goals, SCS has placed a strong emphasis in five high-leverage areas: early literacy, improvement of post-secondary readiness, developing strong teachers, leaders and support staff, expanding high quality school options and working closely with families and community partners to support our schools. We’ve shown our dedication to educating and supporting the whole child by offering a wide array of courses, special programs, and extracurricular activities that enhance student learning. Bridging the achievement gap, closing the digital divide, and garnering public support are key components to educational success. With more than 5,000 volunteers and community partners, we are able to offer support to every child at every level.

Some of our major academic accomplishments include:

  • Shelby County Schools is one of only two districts in the nation to show numerical academic growth in 4th and 8th grade Reading and Math across various demographic subgroups according to the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
  • Maxine Smith STEAM Academy and Campus School have been named 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education for being “exemplary high performing schools.”
  • Middle College High School earned a 100 percent graduation rate for the sixth year in a row. Hollis F. Price Middle College High School earned a 100 percent graduation for the third consecutive year and fifth time in six years.
  • The Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) recognized 22 SCS-managed schools as Reward schools.
  • During the 2018-2019 school year, our students received approximately 2,800 industry certifications. In addition, major investments into our College, Career and Technical Education facilities and programming have been made, including new medical grade machining equipment at Southwest CTC, the return of HVAC programs, and a new auto-shop at Trezevant CTC.
